Boona-Baana’s first and longest running project, Green Door Home, provides a nurturing home environment to children who have been orphaned or abandoned as a result of the AIDS epidemic. Located in the Sinza neighborhood of Dar es Salaam, Green Door is currently home to ten children who live with Tanzanian house-parents and their three children. Boona-Baana ensures that the children’s medical, educational, food and shelter needs are being met in a loving, family-focused environment.
All the children at the Green Door Home attend the Hekima Waldorf School where they study in English and Swahili and are busy discovering and developing new interests and skills in academics, music and sports. Due to difficult circumstances at a young age, some of the children receive counseling and extra help with homework through after-school tutoring.
Dispatch from the Green Door Home…
On Friday afternoons, Green Door’s yard is filled with local boys for its weekly soccer tournament. The organizer and referee, Center Director Mr. Marco, is assisted by Green Door Home resident Linus. Over 50 children come to show off their soccer skills or to watch the action. The tournament has grown from three teams, in its first week, to eight teams today. The children have demonstrated great skills in teamwork and following instructions and the activity creates a safe and exciting environment for the children of Sinza.
Challenges and Opportunities
Prices for basic necessities in Tanzania have skyrocketed and the Boona-Baana Center is confronting large increases in the costs of food and fuel, electricity shortages and a doubling of monthly rent on the Green Door Home property.
World Action is working to raise additional awareness and resources to help offset the increasing commodity costs faced by Boona-Baana and Green Door Home.
You can support this work by helping provide $100 a month for one child at the Green Door Home. That amount takes care of nutritional meals, medical care, therapy, staff salaries and school fees, as well as miscellaneous costs to support sports activities and play time.
