World Action is run entirely by a dedicated volunteer board of directors:
Amy M. Zucchero, Fundraising Chair & Partnerships Co-Chair
Amy is a Program Officer with the Women’s Funding Network, a global network of women’s foundations. Women’s Funding Network champions investment in women-led solutions involving economic security, access to education and heath care, freedom from violence, environmental integrity and human rights protection. Amy joined the Network in January 2004 after completing her Masters in Public Administration at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Amy serves as a fellow of the Full Circle Fund, a premier social change investor leveraging talent, time and resources to support the growth and sustainability of San Francisco Bay Area non-profits.
Idriss Dimitri Lomba, St. Isaac’s Program Officer & Partnerships Co-Chair
Idriss has a BA in international studies from Wright State University in Ohio. He recently completed his internship with the United Nations Population Fund in New York and has moved back to Ohio, where he is completing his Master of Humanities in international studies. For his final project, Idriss is conducting a comparative study on HIV/AIDS policies and politics in East and West Africa. He has spent the past few years volunteering as a caseworker in a refugee resettlement program in Dayton Ohio. He is now also assisting his parents in a community development project in Gabon, his home country.
Jaclyn Berfond, Technical Assistance Chair & Internship Advisor
Jaclyn is an international development professional, with experience in both the nonprofit and private sectors. Jaclyn recently returned from a Kiva fellowship in Kenya, where she worked with two local microfinance organizations. Previously, Jaclyn was a Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations, where she researched issues of international political economy, and worked in client service at a private wealth management firm. Jaclyn holds a BA in International Relations and Economics from Boston University and recently completed the International Organizations MBA program at the University of Geneva.
Jennifer Mackley, Secretary & Treasurer
Jennifer received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Sheffield in UK in 2005, and shortly thereafter returned to the U.S. to make the Bay Area her home. After working in a research at UCSF, Jennifer is now a project coordinator for an investment firm in San Francisco. Jennifer has also sat on the board of the San Francisco chapter of the National Women’s Political Caucus and has consulted for various small businesses and non-profits in the Bay Area.
Justin Garland, Communications Co-Chair
Justin brings nearly a decade of experience in community organizing around public and environmental health issues. His resume includes long-term work with an HIV-ravaged community in southern Africa and outreach to the homeless population of Los Angeles, California. Through the course of his career, Justin has been an advocate for empowerment through health education and has successfully managed several grassroots health campaigns, including a highly effective “Say Yes To Know” HIV testing drive. He currently works for Global Community Monitor, an international non-profit working to ensure environmental justice for pollution-impacted communities.
Manka Johnson, Communications Co-Chair
Manka enjoys starting companies, and she’s been a consultant, advisor to, or founding member of several software and internet startups. Manka holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and an MBA from Vanderbilt University.
Nicole Carta, Board Chair
Nicole is a Resource Mobilization Specialist with the United Nations Population Fund in New York. Previously she worked in population and environment as associate program officer at the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund. She co-founded World Action with her husband Pedro in 2004, and has served on the boards of the San Francisco Chapters of Net Impact Professional, the National Women’s Political Caucus and District Three Democratic Club. Nicole was a 2008/09 Fellow at the Full Circle Fund and recently completed the International Organizations MBA at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.
